I don't think you'd get a box for 18k now, never mind a house..
How did you manage to pay cash for it?

well i live in manchester which houses start for about £80k upwards.....
if you look in some ruff places you can get run down houses for about 5k in places like Leeds/Bradford.......
Money came from a few place's main one was they built a motorway about 150 feet from my mums house so she got loads of Compo, which she dident want/need so she split it between me and my sister, also sold a car i had rebuilt (R5 Turbo2)

Funny thing is, they gave her from Free all new windows for starters. the compo is worked out on the value your house has dropped when they was building the motorway plus living with the noise of it being built/dust etc and now the motorway is done the house has gone back up (plus some) as good access to motorway
Example :
House worth £100,000 before work started
Drops to £80,000 when work is being done (as took 5 years)
so they pay you £20,000 compo plus your windows
once motorway is finished worth £110,000 cos off good access

One bedroomed flat, £75,000 and i got it cheap because i rented it for a year too. Moved into here when i was 21 and 23 now. Got a hugh back garden and about 10 driveways
Got some pics, i'll post them up later.
After an apartment in the next couple of years
Wish i'd never moved out now, it's shite living on your own.
