Well got an operating system on there (well repaired my existing installation) and at about 9pm there was a cracky type pop! sound from the motherboard. Think I'm going to be RMAing some stuff.

When a machine doesnt POST( Power on Self Test ), usually means a couple of things:
1: CPU faulty
2: Ram faulty
3: PSU dead
4: Mobo faulty
Ive never seen a hard drive stop a machine from POST'ing.
Also If you can, i would ask for a different processor.
RUSS knows what hes talking about, Opteron 146, best freaking processor out mate. I got a standard one with a standard cooler running at 2.8ghz and still running at around 33 degrees.

Dont think I said the hard drive stopped it mate, its obviously not posting because the memory/cpu/mobo/gpu has been fired.
The fact that the hard disk attached at the time is fried kinda makes me think everything else went up in flames too.

Yeah, The Pc would POST if the graphics card was dead.
Just because the screen doesnt come on doesnt mean the system isnt posting.
Good luck with Ebuyer, alot of my customers have had lots of problems with them taking so long to sort stuff out

Thats odd.
The machine would normally Still post under normal circumstances

yeah, removal of the HDD allows the machine to post, so it is possible that HDD failure can cause it. very odd though
