I'd like to see the 2 males in a community tank that are fine, its not fair to their fish to have 2 males in with one dominant male as the smaller male will be constantly bullied untill he dies. Plus both of them will flare and nip constantly which will increase stress, which then means they will frequently get white spot and illnesses like that.

ally females flare and nip constantly that is why there is a minimum to the amount you can keep,, spreads the damage evenly so to speak

i just went searching and found this for you -- Variations in aggressive behavior

Some strain are noticeably more aggressive than others, and even the females are nasty to each other. Some strains are more peaceful and can sometimes be kept in groups. A breeder friend of mine was marveling at my large 60 gal community tank, housing about 40 adult bettas, mostly females but also three large males. He couldn’t believe they weren’t killing each other! These bettas were all from the same spawn and knew each other. This strain was a more gentle strain and it was a treat for the eye to see all these bright red and pink bettas swimming in harmony together. (Please do NOT try this at home! ).

copied from a proper betta site -http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_behavior.htm

so thats 3 males and 37 females in the 1 tank scarey huh

personally its not something id like to try having 2 males but i know its been done before ,,

saying that they prob cant near each other anyway as they will be to busy trying not to get nipped from the barbs

the female seem ok, as they have quite short fins, and the male hides out in a shipwreck 90% of the time

OK, just got back in...

7fter...just built a new stand for it which also holds a 4ft tank under the 7ft one (not finished in that pic) is currently not set-up and in my parents garage as couldnt get it to fit in my apartment Its 7ft x 2.5ft (wide) x 2ft (height)

5ft...this one I used to have in my bedroom when I was at my parents, and will be coming to my apartment once Ive finished a new stand for it at Easter. Its 5x2x2 with a built in overflow for a sump filter. Not looking its best in the pic!

And lastly my other 5fter...this one is a Juwel Rio400 in Beech. Ive just taken it all apart and about to set it back up again after the fish that was in it died (caught an internal parasite). Is going to get painted white in the next few days.

And this was the fish that was in it, a 9" Serrasalmus Manuelli Piranha, largest in the UK whilst it was alive!!

its not just a case of adding salt to the water for a marine tank.

You need to have alot of different filters (skimmers, calcium reactors, etc.) and if your wanting to keep live corals and rock (you need to in most larger tanks to keep it going) then you need good lighting. It costs ALOT of money to set-up the tank initially, and the maintenance on a marine tank is alot more than a tropical (keep salt levels up, more water changes, etc. etc.)

I would sell my other two tanks if I could get the 7fter in here, but is just too big for the apartment so having to keep hold of it for a while. Will hopefully have somewhere a bit bigger in a year or so, can set that beast up properly then!!

not really, there are alot of different variables you have to keep check on which you dont in a tropical tank. Its not too bad if your keeping a really small marine tank, but then your limited to just a few fish only.

not always, Ive got some pics of amazing planted tropical tanks, and got some good plans for the current 5fter in my apartment. I think your talking about a proper marine coral tank, which is even more expensive to set-up than a standard marine tank (although do look good)

yeah most days when cleaning it, common misconception that they are bloody thirsty killers. They will head to the otherside of the tank to your arm...put in some goldfish or a mouse and they will attack and eat those though!
