16XE runs far too high compression for a turbo, will need drastic modifications to the head, pistons etc to take a turbo conversion properly

when karen just got hers and had pics up then said she had a problem, i said the reliability of 1.6 turb/charged would be crap and got slated for it

ah well

so why are these kits made by company's if they dont work?

well my head is going away in the next couple of weeks to get ported, polished and what ever else that needs done to it.

is this not why low compression pistons were designed to prevent the high compression

low compression pistons are a start, nobodys saying they dont work, any engine can have a turbo bolted on, its the reliability in question here

well has anyone actually done it properly.

basically what i plan on doing is

mantzel inlet (replica)
dastek unchip
full system exhaust
sbd cambelt roller
steel con rods
low compression pistons
upgrade valves,lifter,seats etc..
m-vaux turbo kit
newman 288 cams
ported and polished head
vernier pulleys
crank knife edged.
lightened flywheel
helix clutch
intercooler
oil cooler
enlarged radiator
cool running thermostat

and anything else that i may need on the way

i am only planning running it on low boost until i no everything works fine then start to increase it if everything is ok

what do you think about that spec steve.

like i said in my other post i am open to any ideas and will be putting pics up of my progress as i go along.

that may take a low pressure setup ok, the main problem is you can make the engine capable with enough cash thrown at it, but then youve got to ask yourself the question is it cheaper to fit a let thats designed for it

Only things i would add to that list are cometic head gasket, uprated injectors, different management (DTA pro etc) and some proper spec cams from piper for a C16xe that has been turbo'd. Also i would not bother with a larger radiator, a standard one is fine for a LET corsa.

Then IMHO you could run high boost very safely.

well there is a tigra on migweb that is running 245bhp and 260lb of torque, with basically the same spec as that.

a proper 1.6 turbo will produce around 180 bhp and cost £3000 plus. it will never be reliable.

for the same money you can get the same power from tb's without the reliability issues and is a tried and tested method.

Sorry but a properly built and spec'd 1.6 turbo would be no more unreliable than a 1.6 on TB's. People just have to be prepaired to spend the money to get the results.

UNLUCKY my boy, It was not a joke, courtenay use 3 headgaskets sandwiched together to change the compression ratio so

if i was to do it id have to go down low comp pistons, forged rods, management etc

then seems i have them, throttle bodies aswell.......... its the obvious answer..... i see it happening soon

what compression does it run with the three gaskets like?

will low compression pistons not sort the ratio out?

well obviously lower compression but not sure what the exact ratio is, some people say that it is a bodge job. basically years back when i wanted to turbo my GSi at courtenay a few people on here talked me out of it and convinced me otherwise.

Looking at the engine spec you have listed, i think you will pull it off, but it's going to cost. At least you will have somethign different than a LET.

Out of the three options (LET, 1.6 TB's and 1.6 Turbo) I see the 1.6 turbo as the most risky route.

Like has been said, done properly it has potetial to be a cracking engine. I'd see it as a quite big risk, when other more well trodden paths are available.

But well done for wanting to try something different!

i have done a ruff price on everything and it comes to around £3500 which isnt much more than doing a LET if it was t be done properly aswell.

rite since no one thinks i should go down the route of the turbo. can someone put prices and web pages up for throttle bodies and a good spec that i can work to.

cheers

turbo on a 1.6-simply not worth it

go for TB's

edit: i would also be interested in looking at TB's for a 1.6

Jamsport I'd say.

Though we could do it for you if you came to us with a spec list?

You all say dont do a turbo etc...

But your all forgetting one thing....
Turbo (and Smoothie's did run right for quite a while) gives the amount of torque TB's could only ever dream off!!!
