I had a green paper Provisional licence and when I passed I was told that I was ok to drive with the Provisional and my Test sheet until my licence arrived.

I had to pay to receive the new style credit card size licence.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/applydl.htm

quote:

Once you have passed your driving test (theory and practical) you should exchange your test pass certificate for a new licence as soon as possible. If you do not claim your test pass within 2 years of the date of your test, the entitlement conveyed by the test pass will be lost and you will have to pass a further driving test (theory and practical) for that category of vehicle if you wish to have it included on your driving licence.

If you hold a provisional driving licence you must complete the declaration on your test pass certificate and send it together with your photocard licence and paper counterpart to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BJ.

If your provisional was issued before 1st march 2004 you have to pay £9. I paid £29 for my provisional, people after that date paid £38 and the fee was included

rcb - ye thought it was free but if she was sayin they charge u now i wouldnt be surprised

marc - ye u can drive with ur green licnese, but for a week or so until ur other comes thru the post. they dont expect u to have it 7 months later

and what sam has quoted says that u have to retake tests if u dont apply for ur licnese after 2 years, so i was right

OK, so why have you not paid £9.00 to get your full licence after passing? Has it taken you 5 months to drive home and write a cheque?

No one is criticising how long it has taken to pass your test.

People are just finding it amusing that you couldn't be arsed to send off for your full licence soon after passing, and are now moaning because you've had an accident that you won't get a hire car because you can't produce a full licence!

look on the coppers face was gold when i pulled out a provisional though! (but i did pass nearly a year ago... i'm a bad lazy person)
