To be fair, Sven has to try differant players/formations due to Owen, Neville and possibly Rio being out. You might not think much of the players/formation that he has picked, but whatever is going on in his head I think the guy does know what hes doing! How long has he being coaching? 30years? I don't think hes got much choice but to switch around the team to make the most out of it.

Sven knows what he is doing? How long did it take him to figure out not to give Gerrard a defensive role?

Yeah but like you said, he has been in charge for 5 years, he should know the best team already and not 'try things out' in the middle of the WC...especially the knock out stages!!
The press know the best team, 90% of the fans know the best team...Sven doesnt seem to though!!

I wonder if he wouldn't be switching things around as much though if he had Owen and Neville? To be honest I think hes trying these things just to get us through now.
If Alan Smith was fit do you think he would have made the squad?

Squad yes, starting line-up no. I saw him in Manchester when all the England squad were there so Im guessing he was with them some of the time.

he is not in the same league as Keane was. Yes he has the commitment, but he doesnt have the same skill in midfield.

I remember Keane in his Nottingham days, was just a simple (but exciting) winger...he turned out so good under Fergie...
Fergie can take the max potential out of a player...I can see Smith on the same path as Keane
btw, I am a LFC fan

I'm not too sure about that. Keane wasn't just about his abilty he was also about his presence on the pitch, Smith doesn't have that. I still stand by what I said about us having Smith purely so no one else could! Just like Wright Phillips and Chelski. He didn't impress me last season really, the little he did play! He is one of those players that can do something amazing out of nothing though. I just don't think hes fitted in at Man Utd.

Hargreaves at right back is a mistake, Carrick in Hargreaves place is a mistake, although I'm liking the attacking in numbers attitude, very positive.

If there was any chance you could get Carricks best game for Spurs and Hargreaves best game for Bayern and watch the two together you'd know why I think it, but it's your opinion so you shall have it. I don't force opinions on others.

Hargreaves did a very good job vs Sweden, give Carrick a chance then really assess both...But Hargreaves is a better bet with Gerrard and Lampard moved forward...Hargreaves is more defensive that Carrick.

Hargreaves consistantly plays in the holding role to a very good standard for Bayern, had 1 crap game last year due to him straining a hamstring but Bayern made all 3 subs so he carried on, Carrick hasn't been emmaculate all season, still good but I think if someone performs excellent in one position, then why drop him for Carrick, and then play him out of position.

actually I would go for Hargreaves but since there are so many Carrick fans here, then give him a chance

Yes, same could be said for Walcott having a chance too.
