I had a Heron problem for most of the last 3 summers, a lot has changed with pond and it's all settled now, it's measuring half a foot wider due to subsidence, which is why a concrete slab was put in before it was filled, had it not been for that the weight of the water would have caused problems.
But it's a lot wilder now and new fish are in, spawned alot and I recommend barley straw for your pond Mrfool, to get rid of bacteria threat.

I thought people put things like that to stop cats tbh. Don't think it would do much of a job against birds

Is it me or does the hole youve dug look exceedlingly small? That fish will just about have enough room to turn around.

We havent finished digging the hole yet, gonna build the wall up then start piling the earth we dig out up against the other side of it where the waterfall is gonna go. Think we are gonna go about 1 1/2 foot down in the middle and then build the walls up above ground too, so the bit we dont dig out will be a shelf for plants in the water. Its gonna be mainly a goldfish pond but might have a couple of koi in there, my mum has bought a house where im at uni which shes gonna rent out to me and a few mates as a bit of an investment, so as shes my landlady we can decorate properly etc and im gonna build a proper koi pond up there

Harsh with the heron mate, we had one at the pond a made at my mums place (where my koi are now) and we were lucky ish cos all we lost was two golden orfe (although pretty big ones ) and some goldfish, my mums mate has a HUGE koi pond with some fish getting towards a metre long, she had a heron there two years ago and it spiked through one of her fish worth almost £2,000
Heard about the barley straw, will have to read more into it. So far got a 12,000 Litre/hour pump, 18,000 litre capacity filter (obviously less with koi) with two 11w UV lights, and a 90 litre/hour air pump. Pond looks good though mate, id love to do one that big if we had the room, its so relaxing chilling in the garden and watching the fish

Wouldn't mind a fish pond when I've got my own house!
Keep this thread updated with pics
I remember going round to a party at a house once and the guy had a garden that was on a hill and had built a fish pond on it. On the down hill side it was about 8 foot tall and had a window through so you could see in and on the top a quarter of the pond was covered over with decking
He must of been loaded!

How much is it going to cost roughly to get the fish pond set up? Not including the cost of fish. Just everything needed to build the pond and any equipment to go in the pond

get a selection of koi in there Chagoi is a must can grow up to 36" long as well as most friendliest koi you will find
altho for Koi ideally needs to be a minimum of 4ft deep.
Look forward to more progress pics

The pond i built round my mums place years ago cost a fair bit cos we got all the equipment from a local watergarden specialists, seen the light this time round though and gone on ebay The one im building at uni is gonna be quite big and quite heavily stocked with koi, hence the 12,000 litre/hour pump, two big filters and 90 litre/hour air pump. The RRP on pump was £270, got it for £105 delivered off ebay, filters RRP £429 but got them for £127 delivered, and pond liners are around £70 delivered as a ballpark figure, obviously depends on size. The building supplies for the one im doing at the moment have totalled about £320 so far including all the walling, sand, cement etc which isnt too bad really, half the price to do it with bricks but this immitation dry stone walling looks really nice i think
Think ive also spent about £300 on koi for the pond im putting in my place at uni, but obviously you could just get smaller ones, less of them, or goldfish

How much do they go for? I've got loads of those huge feckers in my pond... usually 8-15"

They get sent by courier, in a plastic bag filled with water and oxygen then put in a polystyrene box. I think that would be better than me collecting them as i dont have the equipment to fill the bag with oxygen.

Depends a lot on the individual fish, i was bidding on a 15" Shiro Utsuri which ended up going for £190 Theres one for sale on there at the moment for about £2,000 IIRC, but it is huge

Depends on the breed etc...the likes of showa, ochiba, chagoi, utsuri,Kohaku etc.
if they are true Japanese breeds then you can get a fair bit of cash for them providing they in good health.
There's a koi place just out back of Towcester isnt there? Just after where the a5 meets the a43?
