when I setup the net gear one I had to put info in such as ISP username and password and stuff like that. I presume so it can connect without the main AOL being open and connected.
You can download the AOL drivers for your particular router if it supports it.

The router came with the aol upgrade so im sure there should be something i can download. il have a look now hopefully that might solve it

the CD it (probably) came with should contain everything you need if it actually came with AOL. I persume you went through the whole set-up properly to get it all working?

never really had a go at wireless just installed the router for use of internet on the main pc
maybe i should try the cd then?

 Yeah it would probably help seems it'll more than likely contain all the AOL drivers to get it working with AOL.
So is your PC connecting through the router to AOL as normal?

yes, ive been using a little dsl modem to connect to my laptop, but only when the pc downstairs isnt in use

Some more info is needed.
For example I was on 2mb BT broadband using a standard USB ADSL modem and using an Icon on the desktop that when clicked connected to BT and once connected this allowed me to surf the web as normal.
This connection icon and details were all created originally from the original BT CD.
Now when I wanted to upgrade to 8mb the standard USB modem was no good for these speeds and I needed a router. I decided to get a wireless router so I could connect multiple laptops easily using the one net connection.
First all the old CD installed BT related connection icons and setup was uninstalled. Something you may have to do with AOL. The options within IE to always use the dial connection as a default were also removed.
The router replaces the modem as it has an ADSL modem already built in.
Your first step is you usually connect a supplied network cable into the router and your PC and access the router setup page within IE.
It's usually 192.168.2.1 as mentioned above. Once accessed you setup your router to connect to AOL using the supplied AOL settings. Username/Password etc..
Once completed you can restart the router and even with the PC switched off your router will turn on and log into AOL automatically.
You can then open IE and browse the net.
If you want wireless then basically you access the router home page as above and setup the wireless with the relevant security settings.
You can then setup the laptop wireless adapter to match these settings so you can connect to the router. It's also the same on the PC if the router is going to be located elsewhere away from the PC.
Once setup correctly you can remove the ethernet/network cable and browse the net from any PC/Laptop connected to the router.
The router again should log onto AOL automatically without any PC or Laptop even switched on. You no longer have to click any desktop icon to connect to AOL before browsing.

he has all the setup ok. Wireless is enabled, laptop has an exceleent wireless connection, he even connected to his router since it stated that it is 'connected to .....'
but still can't get on the internet, I guess (as stated above) some setup needs to be done on the router on the main pc.

Yeah I just thought I'd give a bit of background to what you are changing with regards from going from an Icon needing to be clicked to an automatic login of the router
Don't suppose any firewall is running?. I had a problem with Zone Alarm not letting me onto the net when the router was first installed. I reinstalled it and accepted the new network connection of the router and it was sound from then on.

did you use the CD supplied to install it and go through the whole set-up process fully?
can you connect the main PC, that is wired to the router, to the internet using this router and AOL?
If so, as it was from AOL, that will rule out any problems with the router settings. And if the other PC can connect will mean its something to do with the wireless.

at the router end of things had you added your laptops MAC address to the authorised list of users? entered the right WEP key on the laptop? sounds like security issues like i had

When you got the router it should have had instructions with how to connect to the router. Nrmally on a WIRED PC you enter an ip adress (as cosmo mentioned) and it allows you to see all the routers settings in a web page layout.

he isnt going to understand that!
open up IE on your wired PC and go to 192.168.2.1 and see what it does.

yea reading the thread and i think your right
i had similar issues and turned out to be my laptop wasnt in the authorised list so i could connect to network but couldnt use internet share folders etc

did you use the CD supplied to install it and go through the whole set-up process fully?

if you mean can i access the internet using the router then yes, ive been using it on a regular basis
and i did use the cd to install it i would have needed to for the router to work..

right, found the user guide for that router, you need to go to
192.168.2.254
default username is 'administrator' and there is no password.

everytime i enter 192.168.2.254 or any similar code into the address bar i get a search results page come up
