Gearbox on the 1.6 engine didnt have a speedo sender hole, so the speedo never worked, hence the EML, that was 4200rpm in 5th, so probably quite a bit more than 90mph , with no water in it
I remember that being in another thread and it was a 12v because I said about him pushing the engine a fair bit.
not that pic, I can assure you it was a 1.6.

Fair enough.
Haimsey, that wouldn't work as a broken speedo is also illegal. You could just do what the Porsche powered campervan on Gumball 3000 did - they had the original speedo that meant it didn't go as fast as the van could. The police stopped them accused them of doing such high speed, and they got out of it by pointing at the speedo saying they couldn't go that quick because the speedo wouldn't let them. They were abroad at this point though.

The vectra will do 131mph, according to vauxhall figures.
I had an indacated 133mph out of mine

well, I never actually had a working speedo, so it might have read 130 on the speedo if it had worked, but i'll never know

Rob, 4200rpm is only around 85mph, not as much as you thought.
70mph is 3500rpm in the 1.6's.

It was on the limiter in 5th (obviously) and IIRC the 1.6 16v sport comes with the f15CR?
Whats that website where u put in wheel size etc and it tells you how fast your actually going?
You can guess roughly how fast you were going by the revs, surely?

I thought the 1.6 would be slightly faster, my 1.4 did about 85 at 4200
Not that it really matters

Rob, you should know, its not the power that matters, its the gearing, and IIRC all Sports came with the same F15CR gearbox?

The power does make a difference though Tom, not much though.
Thats how Rod Tarry got 206mph from a sierra cosworth, after getting 201 from it, just by adding more power.

But it must have revved higher, after all the speed of the car is directly related to the speed of the gearbox cogs and the ratios between the cogs.

yeah, it probably revved all through 5th, instead of stopping at 5k, like most cars do. but the power allows that

Yes Rob, thats what I mean, but to go back to the original point of our discussion, if the 1.4 and 1.6 had the same gearbox and were both revving at 4200rpm, they would both be doing the same speed, around 85 mph yes?

my mothers 1.8 Vectra used to top out at 126mph and just sit there.
a 2.0 16v should do about the same.

In 5th gear, the revs should in theory be half of the speed. i.e. 3500rpm for 70, 4000rpm for 80 on standard boxes. My Corsa does 3500rpm at 70, so does dads Transit.
