make sure you push the plunger all the way in....if you only push it halfway it inhibits half the gears (apparently)

and did you use a 5mm drill bit to lock the gear 'lever' too?

i just used a screw for the lever.

the plunger wouldnt go all the way in. can you remember which way you had to turn the selector to get the pin to go in?

yep......if you losen all the bolts off 1st then pry it open it'll let the oil drain out nicely

or you could take the speedo sensor off to see if its intact

my speedo worked fine when it broke the end off.....

you'll get alot of differnt answers off here on what oil to put in but:

both 'ivor searl'( - transmission specialists) and dj transmissions told me to use dextron II which is basically atf fluid.

so thats what i have in mine, and ive had no problems recently

i take it the pin should go in when wiggling it in the neutral position?

i have been trying again this morning with no luck.

can anyone remember how far and which way the linkage should be moved for the pin to go in.

i think am going to have to do it little bit a time and hopefully get all the gears back that way.

try this:

disconnect the linkage from the selector rod fork (about 3-4" before it goes into the box, its held in with a pin that looks like a rawl plug) then try and rotate the fork clockwise as you push the locking pin in.

do you have a sprung push pin? or the type that you need to pull the plastic plug out of and stick a 5mm drill bit in?

its a fiddly one, need to get some pointy pliers and press in the wire at the bottom of the pin so thet the pin can be pulled out, you will see what I mean when you look at it.

doing this I the pin should locate easily and lock. if it does then the problem will be your linkage.

its just the same.

if i put my left hand down, i turn it clockwise the full way and it seems to go half way in but then pops back out. i have pressed hard as fuck aswell.

can you remember how far you have to turn it and if it is definetly in the neutral position

fucking hell.

i took the plug out, got the drill bit in properly finaly.

done all the other steps. went to check the gears and 1st,2nd reverse arent working.

the day my gearbox broke i could put it into 2 gear but there was nothing there just felt like neutral. drove the car home and there was no first and 2nd. left it for a couple of days and there noticed there was no reverse either.

i am going to give it one more go and if it doesnt work then it a new gearbox short shift gear linkage and a diff. just cos i cant be assed with all the pricking about.

i just tried again and the exact same thing. i am away to buy a short shift linkage and see if that makes a difference. is it just the one bit of the likage that can bend or are there other bits?

i ma just away to take the plate off the diff now, so will get back to you on how that goes.

is the actual linkage ok?

I had this problem with mine...

I was locking the box, and the lever, but things still werent going to plan. The joint where the rod from the lever meets the linkage just passed the bulkead was damaged, and almost apart. Battered it back together, seemed ok for a while but i broke it again on track

i'll get pics

oh.... i also wrecked a diff on my first gearbox on the x14xe..... if the diff has gone you'd know about it. I nearly left the road a few times The will not turn properly, and will make a hell of a racket.
