Could it not also be affected by how many connections are going on in your local Area?

depends how you determine that its slow, if you are getting slow downloads (like kazaa, limewire or whatever) then it could be your ISP priotisiing the traffic.

With my isp for example you'll find that I get better speeds on Bittorrent during the night when its off peak, then after 8/9am it gets slow again so all the 'proper' services get the traffic.

do you not think ISP's have IDS Signertures to detect that kind of crap? Any type of transfer that can be fingerprinted will be fooked QoS that most ISPs (if not all) are doing.

totally misread your comment, please ignore my previous!

I just had muppet download:

http://www.mirror.ac.uk/mirror/ftp.freebsd.org/ftp/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-IMAGES-i386/6.2/6.2-RC1-i386-bootonly.iso

and he got 120kb/s at this time of night, which is pretty good IMHO. Fact is you won't get brilliant speeds at the peak of internet usage.

other things to consider:

a) apple's site being slow/having issues
b) conguested links to the US (if thats where it came from) due to the problems we are seeing in Asia atm cause underwater fibre has been cut causing lots of traffic to be redirected through the states at the moment.
