We tell my insurance about every mod, they no about the exhaust, alloys, kit etc etc. Atm they haven't upped my insurance once but just wont cover my exhaust etc.
Also test is this week dont plan on touching the engine until march time when i have some cash after the paint work just getting heads up

Engine tuning is a bit different to cosmetics though. Get a quote before you do any work to avoid having to take it all off again.

Can i ask what you mean by "skimming the head" ? and also, what insurance company are you with ?

Skimming the head is that you do when the head gasket fails and causes the head to warp. You skim less than a mm off when you do it just to get the head flat again otherwise when you re-fit it the gasket will fail again. It's not a method of tuning the engine.

skimming the head is just a good way to start imo.. or at least have it checked for flatness and a new gasket fitted. Then a good service and general health check for your engine. Only then modify. I would suggest maybe going for carbs as well. May be the best bang for buck. But they are a bitch to have set-up and keep running right. and can be exspensive in the long run!
I know its not what your looking for i really do but there comes a point where you have to say. okay i need a different engine. I just changed my 1.2 to a 1.6 nova gsi engine (1.6 8v) And they are plenty tuneable. And to be honest they have plenty of power on tap from standard!

Yes i no, i would like a bigger engine just the fact my insurnace company would say no and put me up to around £2000 for a 1.6

change that £2500+ for 18/0 no claims so i think ill pass on the 1.6 atm.

skimming the head will increase your compression if you take enough off too.get a 4 branch manifold and a fast road cam and vernier. get it all tuned properly that should make a lot of difference.

You don't increase the comression by skimming the head though. You do that by using higher compression pistons.

Not really my insurance company seems a little back to front. Keep the same car and put a 1.6 16v in and your looking at £2500+ insurance, buy a new car with a 1.6 16v in around £1600, tune up a 1.4sri 8v and they say the price stays the same but they won't insurance the engine mods, said the same with my kit+exhaust, however they insured my alloys for free for £1000

if your looking at insuring all the mods your better off going to a mod specialist company who know what your talking about. normals companys like directline, aviva ect dont account for any specilist items. and thus raise your premium through the roof.
