I think I might even run a dual boot on my laptop when its sorted....
Is it possable to have a instalation of knoppix on there so when windows breaks again I could just boot into knoppix and still access the files on the windows partition?

I'm running on AMD Sempron 3400+ (1.8?) with 2.5GB RAM and a 1GB USB ReadyBoost drive.
Runs really well, but processor utilisation often at 100% and I am sharing a few hundred MB RAM for graphics so I can use Aero. I think you would be OK with 1GB-1.5GB with a decent graphics card with its own memory and a decent processor/dual core.
