Colin I'd love to drive the golf, but I'd be a nervous wreck incase I got as much as a scratch on it

If you dont drive it im just going to sell it!! I cant afford to run it myself............it was bought with the intention of you learning how to drive in it!! Want me to punt it & buy you 20 driving lessons with the proceeds

A serious suggestion Jade...what bout a Mk7 Fiesta?
They are great... lovely to drive, great to learn in i should think?
You could pick up a 1.25 or 1.4 Zetec Climate (with all the toys, AC, CD PLayer etc.) for your priceband.
I had my mates one for a week when she went away - it was sooo comfy in comparason to my B, and quite happily sat at 90+ - that was a 1.25!

I dont see whats wrong with the Mk2 Golf, cheap & very easy to drive. Lovely balanced steering....not too light but heavy enough to let you know its still connected to the wheels!! Cheap enough for parts!! Why not get rid of the mini & use the golf? Just sell the mini then swap the insurance over & get it taxed, couldnt be easier.
