a mate of mine had one like just like bretts, was standard and didnt let him down once and it went went well. faster than a mates 205 1.9 gti.

however there was a bloke at the end of my road who had one for about 5 years and every other day he was working/ repairing it and he was in his 40s and never really seemed to drive it hard.

i personally wouldnt, they didnt age very well and in 2007 i can imagine they would be constantly in the garage but they are good fun

Not necessarily..you can do it without although it still takes a while. As a comparison I had a clutch done on a 1986 1.4 Peugeot 205 by Mr. Clutch and it was £120 iirc, The 1986 1.4 Renault 5 GT Turbo was £290. Gearbox took 6 ish hours to change too. Fun cars though

bag of shite engines, not even injection! Get through quite alot of head gaskets, definitely wouldnt have one as a run about or daily transport.

Great fun to drive, as said get a std one - if you can find one. Copper radiators are a must for keeping the temps down.

and charge ooling even on stndard engines. i dont like the way people slate them and say bag of crap. one of the most easily tuned engines in the world. and i dont mean by upping the boost. if done properly they can be tuned safely. CAnt say the engine is shite neither.i prefer carbs to injection all day long!

They got a bad reputation along time ago due to bad owners and poor tuning. Muppets winding the boost upto 30 psi without strengthening the internals, what did they expect when they blew up?! Easily get 200 bhp safely if you dont cut corners.

I totaly agree mate. its ALL human error. you could probably even get a TVR to not break down for more than a day if the owners did spank em all the time from cold etc or service them properly or just generaly treat em good. R5 Turbo's will look after u if u look after them. i have even owned an abused r5 turbo that had an engine overhaul took of all the tat like fse boost valve etc etc. just got it running standard and its still going now 2 years later on the same headgasket etc.

No they aren't.

They're just getting on a bit.

Anything that's made of plastic and drives the wrong wheels is not old school.

MK I Escort, now that's old school.

A standard R5 doesn't need uprated anything. If you don't mess with it then it won't give you problems. As totally standard cars they're fine.

I used to rag the tits out of mine. Only problem ever was the water pump going, but that was to be expected with it being the original 16yr old one still chugging away.

...I should also point out that even tho the water pump went and I drove a few miles with the temp gauge glowing red the head gasket still didn't pop
