I like the Astra so much more than the golf sorry! Was only a joke though.

Depends what your after....
You wont get an S for near 20k.....
You can get an 05 or so Exige (190bhp) for about 23k... the S's are near 30k.
For that money i'd buy a 2000+ 996 Carerra 2 - quick, comfy.... more for the money over an Exige S. The exige S will give more thrills though, no doubt about it.
M3 - 996 just has it in the looks for me. M3's look like BMW that the taxi man down the road has etc etc... loads of them.

wont get a nice 34 GTR for 20k i'm afraid.... 26k maybe... and another 10k to make it fucking mental
a 996 will be just as quick.... with the exige S humping them both (round a track)

i wouldnt get a 996 personally. either get a 993 or save for a 997, or get something different altogether!
the 996 is possible one of the worst engined porsches (disregarding all the front engined ones!)

993's are nearly the same money as a 996 I'd love a 993 GT2, or even just a turbo

Depends if you are an air cooled purist I guess. For me personally I preffer the 993 but can't justify paying more for an older car with more problems.
However what are 996 GT3s going for? They aresurely a sound buy?

Spot on as they were the first of the reliable easy to run low maintainence Porshes. I've been lucky enough to have some of my clients take me out in their cars and I must say the 996 Carerra 2 is no slouch and the 996 Turbo is Even the Cayman S is pretty amazing.

I know someone with a '98 C2 and does around 30k miles a year, on over 100k miles now and it's never missed a beat. Horses for courses, all cars will have a bogey in it's pack.
