Sorry to sound silly, but what do you mean by 2.2?

Yea Deano, I know it's not fancy, it's just a little better. When I bought my car I knew next to nothing about cars, if I knew there was a GLS version with power steering, I would probably have waited for one.

Anyway.... Are you sure it's a chain? I'm 90% sure mine is a belt.

Wonderboy, the 2.2 litre engine from the Astra/Zafira/Vectra/VX220 is chain driven.

And your 1.0 is as well, the belt you can see is the alternator belt, you can't see the cam chain, it's under the silver cover.

I'll find a pic of the 2.2 with the cover off to show you where it is

I found this old picture of the AFM, as you can see to the right of it, there is a belt which connects to the alternator, this also connects to the camshafts and the crankshaft.

Picture was taken before I cleaned the engine bay up.

Your AFM is also the wrong way around. You may want to get that sorted - probably will explain lumpy running.

Your engine is DEFINITELY chain driven - a 12v engine is a 12v engine I'm afraid.

lol you don't need to be sorry. Easily mistaken. My girlfriends Fiesta has an aux belt like ours, but also a cambelt, which you can't really see from the top of the engine.

Basically, you see the bit that is perpendicular (at right angle) with the black plastic in the top of the middle of the engine? That is where the chain is.

I am right in thinking the auxiliary belt is connected to the alternator and the camshafts.

Then there is a chain which connects the camshafts to the crankshaft?

I'll check this out tomorrow.

I can't find out where i put my haynes manual

Sounds like a diesel normally Dean, or a rattle, like a loose bike chain I suppose

Wonderboy, that second pic, that's just the alternator belt, it doesn't go near the cams

I can't find a pic of the 2.2 which shows what I mean, but you can just about see it on the right of this pic of a Ford engine -

Sorry, I'm appearing a little stupid here.

My thinking was that the alternator belt was connected to the cams, the cams was what turned the belt, allowing the alternator to work and the battery to charge.

If the alternator belt isn't connected to the cams, what turn the alternator belt?

My cars sounded like a diesel since the day I've had it, has done 8k miles, hasn't missed a beat, had it serviced when I got it and he didn't say anything. And all the 12v's I've heard sound the same

crankshaft turns the aux belt turning in your c\ase the water pump and the alternator.

It the crankshaft also turns the timing chain which turns the cams

Nothing to worry about Deano. Our engines are loud, and there is nothing we can do about it.

All my mates say to me it sounds like a tank, usually I have to turn the engine off just to hear what they are saying

Has anyone come across a 12v timing chain snap before?

Service is due in 2k miles, so it should hold out.

Will definitely ask my mechanic his advice though.

Thanks for your advice Robin, made me slightly worried, but knowing it's still 30k off the recommended change, 2k miles should be ok. Saying that, I've probably jinxed myself

The crank pulley turns the alternator belt.

Basically, on the end of the crank, is a pulley with 2 belts on it, one goes round the cam/cams and the water pump (and some tensioners) and the other one goes to the alternator (and PAS/AC if you have it)

I like this thread, I enjoy learning about cars

Anyway, I have taken three screen shots to try and explain things a little better.

I think I'm correct here.

This image shows the timing chain - the one marked at the top. This connects the cams to the crankshaft.

The bottom belt is the alternator belt, which is connected from the alternator to the crankshaft, and water pump for the 12v?

I know my engine doesn't have all these, but what are they?

power steering pumps etc..?

The third screen shot is this:

What is the thing on the right hand side? It looks like an alternator to me, but the alternator is attached to the crankshaft, at the opposite side of the engine, is it not?

Yeah, you got the chain bit right.

The belt you can see, is the auxiliary belt. The alternator is the bit with coppery colour in it.

The first pic, the bottom chain looks like the oil pump to me.

The alternator can be at the front OR back, but on the bottom pic, it's the A/C pump.

On the middle pic, following it down and round from the top right, it goes PAS pump, AC pump, bottom pulley, tensioner, idler, alternator, idler, tensioner, PAS pump.

The idlers are just wheels which turn freely, they don't do anything as such.

Thanks for that, I was confused about the oil pump, as it's where I was expecting the alternator to be. Then I saw the alternator on the other side of the engine, and wasn't sure why that was.

But that for clearing that up everyone.

Yeah, generally you'll find the alternator is near the top of the engine

OK, I found some batteries and took some pictures - some aren't the best of quality, as I could see what I was aiming at and I was holding it with one hand

Looking at that, I see no signs of a chain, but I do see a belt.

The picture above you can see the belt going from the cams down to the crankshaft.

This picture clearly shows a belt connecting the Camshafts to the Crankshaft.

Below are a few other random shots I took, all showing a belt with no sign of a chain anywhere!

That belt 100% does not connect to the camshafts.

The cam chain is hidden behind the metal of the engine as it needs to be constantly lubricated.

The chain is there, normally it's all covered up though.

Sorry about that - I never realized it was inside the engine casing.

Robin, there is a wheel which is on the outside. I thought this wheel was attached the the camshaft for some reason, because it is right next to where the cams are.

Sorry about that guys.
