Bora's a bit of a drug dealer car too in Northern Ireland - the Golf is much better, but that audi looks respectable if you can afford it thats maybe ur best bet

I looked at the Ibiza Cupra PD 160. They are alright but the build quality isn't anywhere near that of a MK4 Golfs. I like the looks/performance/MPG though. Plus 190-200bhp & stupid amounts of torque are supposed to be acheivable from a remap. But you prob need to upgrade the clutch to cope with the torque.

Think there is about 0.4 of a second in it to 60. Mid range the TDi is probably quicker...

We didn't buy it at the right time for those deals The only thing they were doing was a fairly decent finance offer back in december. I'm not sure on the monthly payments as my dad bought it for me... They have been out for a year now so there should be some failr cheap ones about. Though I would recomend a new one over a second hand one as the first lot off the production line seem to be fairly ropey

They are a bit wierd to drive if you aren't used to really new cars with all thier modern safety crap. The pillars on them are huge because they have airbags in them and you are sat really far back so the engine doesn't cut your legs off if you crash. But you get used to it after a while and don't notice it. Then when you get back into a proper car it feels wierd

I do bout 15-17k a year (business and pleasure) and my corsa has turned out to be v expensive...I struggle with 400 miles to a tank.

Im converting to a Ibiza 1.9tdi sport (130 jobbie), had one for aweek and hd 550 miles... and i wasnt driving like a granny!

If your after something 5+ Y/o and want something pokey, your limited to VAG really - no body else jumped on the Common rail band wagon till a few years back .

Bit outside the box, but the Fiat Stilo used the 1.9 JTD engine, you can get a pretty decent looking "Sporting" for not alot of money due to Depreciation hitting them HARD . Derivatives of it were used in Astras, vectras, Alfas and Saabs so should be a decent unit .

Yeah they're not the nicest, but they're cheap and fairley new!

Doubt you'll get a saab for under £10k tbh.

Suppose it depends on your budget. Looking now the Astra 1.9 has now dropped into the 8-9k bracket. Get a 16v one, and a "tuning box" (£2-300) will knock the power up to 200bhp, 300+ lbft of torque - enough to cause a fair bit of rivlary between the equally powered (but remaped)888 astra's and VXR owners on the astra forums .
