ive painted 6 sets of wheels by my self now,
all have been a superb finish, none have flaked at all.
only bad side is that if they do get hit hard enough they will chip, by hard i mean a poorly aimed air gun nut remover or big stones hitting them.
Powdercoat on wheels in my experience is pretty shite, they never seem to look really shiny or glossy, plus hot brake material sticks in to them with it being a plastic coating and is then never able to be removed.
The best of all worlds is to get them 2pack painted at a body shop, but if your doing them yourself, major, thourough preparation is the key to getting a good finish and a durable finish too.
few pics of what ive done in the past

any wheels i have painted havent flaked, there not as tough as powder coating but are shinyer in some cases.
Im a painter and personall i would get them powder coated. There are a few bodyshops who do powder coating aswell round my way so may be best to ring a few and ask if they do it and if not do they know of any.
Also yellow pages will give you afew round you!

Ive sprayed a few sets of wheels, with different paints and i found that wheels with spokes that stand proud from the rim do tend to chip/flake.
The wheels on my car i did myself with normal Holts spray paint, primer and lacquer. my wheels dont have spokes that stick out and have tyres that have anti-kerb walls on them, this way the rear wheels dont take a roasting from all of the grit etc from the front wheels.
so basicaly if your spokes and or rim stick out further than the tires, i honestly wouldnt bother.
