You'll find most of the people who have spent a lot of money camming and remapping their car, have not done anything on the cheap and since they've invested a lot of money into the car, will look after it and drive it properly - i.e. not ragging it when cold, servicing regularily etc. Where as some chav who's just bought a standard 106 gti for cheap, won't really care what happens to it and probably take it to the limiter daily straight after turning the key
Just can't see how you can make that judgement, yeh fair enough if the mods have been done poorly / they're cheap budget mods etc. Bit like the way people prefere women drivers, yet most women drivers i know don't ever check their oil or coolant, and drive it round not caring whats happening under the bonnet
I see so many people look for and buy a standard 106 gti. They get it, then after a few months do the usual, exhaust + filter, suspension... then cams and remap etc. They could've had a car sorted for not much more than they paid for it standard.
Well, I mean if someone has spent a fortune on tuning the engine, they're not going to drive it slow are they, they'll drive it hard as every car tuner does. And just becasue he's cammed it, doesn't mean hes not meant to know not to drive it hard from cold.
And if I buy one thats already been cammed for example, it might have the wrong degree cams in it for what I want it for, so i'll to buy a set anyway. But I see where you're coming from.

a lot more variables to it than that. What cams did they have etc.
You'll struggle to get over 160 bhp without TB's to be fair - whatever cams you go for.
169 bhp What cams were they using? bullshit rollers? saxp
saxosportsclub is a bit more clued up than saxp, their engine forum is pretty decent.

None i'd buy a phase1 or early phase 2 172 for the money. Lets be fair any 106 gti you buy your easily going to spend £££ tunning it. Best cut the middle man out?
say 106 Gti is 3k for the price of an exhaust and road tax you could of got something much better?

172 is no quicker than a standard 106, or at least barely, 1/4 mile day my 106 with just an exhaust and filter was beating my mates 172's times, theres also a vid floating round on the net of a 106 and a 172 on a track the 172 just wasnt pulling away on the straights.

No offence, I don't really like 172's. I'd MUCH prefere a GTi, for the looks, and for insurance purposes. I'll be happy with a full exhaust and enclosed filter for a while. Then i'd save for something worth while tunging, a CTR for example
