Yeah. For most users.... who dont want to do some decent rigs. When I want to Crossfire two 3870's my system is going to be drawing anything between 550w and 620w. Plus if I wanted to go down the water cooling road, I can.

3870 x2's draw 200w per card :O - so then you probably will need a massive psu.

but, quad core, 4gm ram, good gfx, a couple of hdd, and a couple dvd drives will not draw more than 400w.

unless your gaming above 1650x1080 your not gonna notice difference between a 8800gs/gt and a gtx really. also, richies mobo, p5kc is ok, but not many features, the p5k-e and abit ip-35pro (88 pound at scan atm! http://www.scan.co.uk/products/productinfo.asp?WebProductID=761265) are much more feature packed and will give better performance.

so personally

q6600 oem
sycth ninja cpu cooler
p5k-e or ip-35pro motherboard
2x2gb Geil black dragon from overclockers.co.uk (60 quid)
Seansonic s-12 80 PSU (550w)
512MB Gainward 8800GT Bliss

Agreed with Russ about the GPU. No point going for the GTX. If you want the next best then go for the newer version on the GTS, or failing that the GT.

Is this all still within my price range? Is it best to shop around or shall I head straighter for oc.uk or ebuyer.co.uk?

Man I knew it wouldnt be long before something was said about my P5KC

It does the job well though be fair and is a bloody good overclocker. Just suffers from horrible voltage droop on the CPU under load. Must do the pencil mod at some point.

Oh and the RAID capability of the board is wank...... the company that designed it needs to be shot.
RAID only works on it if you use an internal SATA hdd and an external SATA hdd. How daft?

Any good overclocking intel 775 mobos that don't have any onboard sound, but just the necessities (usb, firewire, SATA/IDE, good raid chipset etc)?

btw, does anyone know if PCI slots on mobos still support 5v cards? - majority of my Protools setup uses 5v only PCI cards and upgrading would cost 5-10x the cost of the system

Every mobo ive seen comes with onboard hi def sound which you can just disable.

How many 5v cards do you have? Most motherboards have 1 or 2 dedicated slots for 5v/3.3v PCI cards.

1-2 will be fine (i don't mind loosing a few outs/in) - the reason i ask about not having onboard stuff is due to the fact that these Digi/Protools cards are a little fussy, plus with my current Asus Nforce2 board, accessing SATA drives floods the whole PCI-Bus and causes stuttering galore (though i've been told it's a fault with NForce2 chipset). So less stuff on the board, the less i have to deal with

But a P5K-E worth going for? Been told the new strikers are alright - but seems a little pricey

Nforce2 had so many issues it was unreal. That chipset has so many compatability issues its unreal.

Personally, an Asus Blitz Extreme is pure sex in a box.

Its a beauty

My nf7-s 2 was amazing, i can't remember any issues with it and it's still going strong.
My athlon xp-m was overclocked quite a bit and the system was silent with my water cooling.

I nearly go this one but went for the MSI as I also wanted to match with the 2 MSI HD3870's I got.

A waste of money . No the second one I can't tell when it kicks in. It's setup in the CCC to run when needed etc.. However I've only had them 2 weeks and I see ATI are bringing out a dual GPU version. Basically both on 1 single card.

http://www.xenonweb.us/showthread.php?t=3180

Saying that there is no way it would fit in the case I got and it's an older case design that I liked. Long before crossfire and these massive cards were thought of.

I got 2 of the OC versions. (I know it's only a bios change) but MSI has them standard running at 800 / 1126. Run at approx 44 degrees when idle and only 60 odd when maxed out or as far as I can tell so far as ATI tool and Riva Tuner are not able to control the temperatures or report them as yet for crossfire. Any attempt made to alter the fan temp control even as idle send the temps soaring until I panic and switch off. No amount of changes brings it down until restart and removal. Think there is a bug

The price for them is very good however for what you get. I remember paying £300 for the last X800 vivo that was bios flashed to the XT and was only running about 540 / 650 ish something like that.

The new X2 is going to cost less than two HD3870's I think but it's fucking big . Imagine two of them

haha beat me to it but...

1. They will not fit my case.
2. I didn't have and wouldn't spend nearly or arounf £600 on graphics cards.
3. No games really take advantage of normal crossfire as yet never mind quadfire.

Based on everyones thoughts and Ideas I decided I'd price up what you guys have said:

q6600 oem £162.14

sycth ninja cpu cooler £28.19

p5k-e motherboard £104.56

2x2gb Geil black dragon £70.49

OcUK Huntkey 550W £41.11

512MB Gainward 8800GT Bliss £158.61

Thermaltake VB1000SNS Soprano SuperMidi Tower - Silver £46.99

= £331.28 (inc Tax)

that seems a little low? I substituted a power supply. but still 550w
