No its 10000000% different.
I played Union for years to a decent level, and had mates who played both forms. And basically League was for guys who had a bit of power but little skill, and Union was for people who had a brain (aka skill) aswell as some power.
Hence why Union is watched by the general sports fan, and League is watched by northeners.
