He's also forgetting that sitting at 60 in a diesel for 20 miles would probably get even better mpg.

I get 37-40 normal driving but if i'm sitting at 85 on the motorway it goes up to 50+ no bother.

Partly the reason I sit at 60mph though, is because it's a 12v, and sits comfortably at 60mph. Sitting at 70mph is fine, but it doesn't have much more to give.

Don't get me wrong, I will change the 12v sooner or later, and no doubt for something faster.

But working out the MPG has made me realise the 12v isn't so bad after all, once getting to 60 - 70mph.

Stavs - a Corsa C SRi is on the cards. Depending on mileage to/from work (may get a job in London you see) I'll be choosing the 1.8 or 1.7!

what you lose in revs, you gain in torque tho. You don't generally fell power as much as torque. For instance, diesels can sit in 6th at 30mph and them pull to 60 mph without gear changes, and still return good economy. I doubt many lower power petrols would do that, even with down changes

12v does 40mph and up in 5th. Albeit slowly, but still

i dont know how you get acurate readings when you didnt start with an empty tank and drive till it was bone dry?

He's saying you don't know exactly how much fuel you used over the last 344 miles apart from going by having a quarter tank left.

The VAT receipt I got at the petrol station says I used 32.76 litres in 344 miles.

I reset the mile thing (the one you can reset) every time I fill up.

Yeah, click. Then another squeeze, click.

So, I did however many miles, filled up.

Reset odometer thing.

Drive 344 miles.

Fill up again, click. Then squeeze and it clicks.

32.76 litres to 344 miles.

Unless I'm COMPLETELY missing something?!

i wonder what you could get out of a 12v if you never went over 60mph and coasted up to junctions and down hills? looking at 50+ mpg possibly?

my first car (12v) used to run on fumes. it was essentially a shopping car - dead slow but very very economical. no matter how much you 'rag' a 12v, it will never return bad fuel economy -

It also looks like its from someone who has driven a couple of non turbo diesels and a couple of vans and currently drives a 1.2 petrol.

As I said, I've never seen a petrol Sprinter, I need a van for work, I don't like it but I sort of grew out of my Corsa a bit

And John, I'm not sure what my current 1.2 petrol has gotta do with anything, all I was saying is the diesels that I've drove have basically all sounded shit and I've not liked driving em, and they haven't all been old rickity things I've drove a lot of brand new diesels that have been getting PDI'd. My dad keeps saying how you can barely tell new diesel engines by sound cos they're that refind now, but recently I've heard a mk5 Golf 1.9 tdi and a Merc E class diesel and yeah, they are a lot quieter than some older diesels but they still both sounded shit, as I said it'd take a lot to win me over, I've just not liked diesels since the first time I drove one.

I managed 48mpg on sunday on a 200 mile round trip, alot of which were on roads like this, (at speeds that a 12v could only dream of )

I get 450 miles to £41 of diesel in a 1.7tdi, so thats better then the mpg your gettin, so id stil rather stick with a diesel
