This may be what is slowing down the HDD, opening programs etc. If you can provide some info stating don't turn it off then i'll take my comment back, however havent ever had a problem

Don't suppose he has itunes installed by any chance?. The g/f's sister had the strangest issue where an itunes version would feck up the dvd rewritter and cause it not to be seen in windows or detected. Removing Itunes and getting a much later version fixed it

ok downloaded the service pack (i think) and umerous windows updates, seems to be alot faster now, bot lightning but much better.

well itunes on my vista, when i open it its all black until i minimize it and open it again
