You do know that the test is not all the accurate....
Web-based speed tests measure only how fast data is able to travel from one part of the internet to another, which is subject to delays.
Also other factors that affect results are things like the number of people using the test, and the processing power of your computer.
An accurate test would be to use hardware that directly connects to a modem.
Yes, but speedtest.net (at least the London server) is very fast, and gives quite an accurate reading of real world line speed. Another way of doing it is to get a bandwidth monitor and download some large files from various places so your bandwidth is running at max.
It doesn't in all cases.
I know my speed from a fast server and its double what the speedtest shows.

BT Option 3 up to 8mb but I have moved quite far from the exchange so in
Maidenhead
D: 1460kbps
U: 340kbps
London
D: 1398kbps
U 377kbps
Which is shocking tbh. I think the contract is up in Jan, will I get better speeds from anyone else, still using BT phoneline hardware?

Have you tried removing the faceplate on the BT socket and connecting the ADSL filter to the 'test' socket inside?

No, hence why it's sold as up to 8mb.
