For that money around a 1997 jeep cherokee! they do a 2.5 diesel or a 4.0 petrol. You will get a good 4.0 petrol for about half you are willing to spend and if you are just going up the farm (not many miles) buy the petrol one as it will be alot less than a derv!
Not too big either but big enough in the back to carry things
Just been looking. £1000 will get you a mint one with full MOT. due to there thursty habbits there arnt worth anything. I would seriously look at one if i were you!

Before you said that it needs to pull a horse box, I'd have recommended a X-type Jag with AWD.
But now, I'd say some kind of truck, like a Hilux - remember what they did to it on Top Gear?!

kinda advice i was looking for cheers, with them being 4.0l etc, is the insurance silly?
