Wanted to try 'brushing' the body kit, but ended up with hundreds of layers and it all got too confusing.

Yours look ok mate, you've managed to grasp the basics by the looks of it.
To lower it, you need to select the car, and the background, not jsut the car which is what I'm guessing you're doing.
