Gretna did pretty well I suppose. Non league to SPL, an FA Cup final defeat on penalties, entry into the UEFA cup and then dissolved in 5 seasons

Oxford United have a strong claim. Especially if you look at us from the 1970's to present day.

Can any club beat this tale of woe.....

Pretty much back to back promotions from oxford amateur league to the old division two.

Division two champions.

Finished 10th in the old first division and won the league cup - our only trophy

Relegated from first division and lost all our best players- dean saunders ect.

Then followed a long spell in the championship during which time Robert Maxwell was done for fiddling old peoples pension money, killed himself and we went bust as all our assets were stripped.

Then the Taylor report said we couldnt stay at the manor ground so we also needed to build a new ground - looked like we were going out of business.

Then arrives a new owner - Firoz Kassam who promised to build a new ground and had a four year plan to get us in the premiership.

The ground took 3 years to build because plannng permission was opposed by a local pub. Kassam only wanted the new ground so he could build a new cinema and hotel and wouldnt put any money into the club untill he had planning permission.

We were relegated from the championship.

Then we won division one.

Then we were relegated from the championship and also played our last game at the manor the day we got relagated.

We started division one in the Kassam famous three sided shit hole.

We got back to back relagations to the division two. Kassam basically milking the club for all he could and putting nothing in.

During these four years we had 5 managers.

Martin Atkins took us 12 points clear at the top of division two at christmas. Kassam sacked him and sold our best players - we didnt even make the playoffs.

We then had two more relagation battle years in division two with another four managers.

Kassam was finally kicked out of the club by a group of fans braking into the board room, taking him hostage and threatening to kill him if he didnt sell up.

He sold the club to Merry - an oxford fan - who put Jim Smith back in charge- our most successful manager who won us the league cup in the eighties. He didnt sell us the ground though and is currently trying to milk us for 35 million pounds to buy it- 15 million more than its worth and is slowly increasing our rent to the point where we cant pay it- he also refuses to do any improvements to the shit hole of a ground

We were relegated form the football league by one point on the last day of the season- the first time we had been in the relagation zone all season. We played Leyton Oriont at home who beat us 3-2 - they got promoted that day and we went down- we were winning for most of the game and they knew they were promoted because other results went for them so they were celebrating on the pitch for the last 15 minutes while we were desperately trying to stay up. That was the best and worst fotball game I have ever been to.

So back in the conference. We were unbeaten at christmas with Jim smith and 13 points clear. We set a conference record attendance of 13000 on boxing day and broke the attendance record of every club we went to- nearly always outnumbering the hme fans with our away support. We then got 1 point out of 25 and only just scrapped in the playoffs.

First leg we won 1-0 away at exeter- should have been three or four nil. Home leg we were 1-0 up at half time, 2-0 on aggregate- great we are going to wembly for the play off final. Exeter srored two late goals we missed three open goals - extra time and penalties. We were 3-1 up in the shootout- we then missed three in a row and its all over.....more tears at the end of a season.

Next season it all goes to pot - jim smith leaves, patterson takes over and we go nowhere-mid table.

This year we are in a relagation fight in the conference- patterson is sacked as manager, merry is replaced as director - jim smith comes back then goes again- we have now been docked 5 points for fielding an illegibale player... we have a new manager and a new directer.... the club is on the verge of going bust and to be honest ive just about lost all hope of ever getting out of this damn league.

So we went from the bottom of football to the top, won a major trophy, then came all the way down losing our ground and going bust along the way.

We have now had 35 managers in 11 years - a record.

I as an oxford fan have not only been to every club in the football league and conference- but I have actuall been to every ground with Oxford- they are the only team in the country it has been possible to do this with. We are also the only club to have played in the conference that has won a major trophy.

May not be a glorious history but it certainly hasnt been dull.

Hearts have a claim actually, forgot about them

15 years is a conservative estimate as to how long the debt will be cleared, a debt owed to their own owner through his bank
