On a bike it slows you down VERY quickly. I like doing it in traffic, it's all about car control and timing. Most people are leaving to small a gap and stamping on the brake pedal causing traffic for no reason, if everyone just flowed with their driving traffic would be a lot calmer.

Its ok but then you have the people who just look for brake lights and end up getting within inches of you because the didn't notice you slowing down.

You honestly shouldn't make a constant habbit of it, a clutch isnt cheap

Correct, but when slowing down you don't want the engine running as it normally would because it wouldn't slow down. It's like if you was rolling upto a set of lights and you turned the engine off and didn't press the clutch, it would just be the same as engine breaking the engine wouldn't just suddenly stop because there is no fuel, the momentum of the wheels keeps the engine turning.

The only reason cars running carbs used fuel when slowing down was because the air going through the carbs would draw the petrol in but when petrol is injected it can stop injecting petrol if it is not needed. It was one of the selling points when fuel injection was first brought out.

Think mine is on the way out anyway, every time you pull off it makes a strange groaning noise

This may be due to me pulling off all the time solely on the clutch? Is that another topic?

Everyone that lives in my house does it and as far as I can remember only one car has ever needed a clutch replacing and it was bought the week before so someone else goosed that one up.

If you're worried about wearing it out tho, heal and toe is where it's at

It's funny in my car, whenever I'm slowing down I use engine braking, sometimes I heel and toe, other times I don't but either way if there's a few 'yoofs' about my car WILL get looked at

If I heal and toe they hear a loud rev and look, if I don't they hear it popping and look

Heel and toe does take some getting used to, it's best to try it away from public roads at first First time I tried was on some empty car park in Nottingham in a Suzuki Ignis 'Twas a bit jerky

I sit in a load of traffic every morning queueing up to a toll bridge, and you get that all the time.

Might be a slight tangent, but my dad seems to have no idea what he's doing with the pedals so puts a fair bit of revs on, dumps half the clutch really quickly, and then slams the brakes on when he's near enough about to hit the person in front. There's no point trying to tell him to be more gentle because he tells me to get out the car if I don't shut up

If you want to save wear on your clutch just change gear without using it.

dont see why you need to heel and toe. its only used to match the revs when changeing down fast so engine brakeing dose not lock the driven wheels, ie in a rwd car mid bend, it would be like yancking the handbrake

That's a fun game to play when bored My Sprinter van doesn't like it tho, although I think some of the synchros are on the way out anyway, it really doesn't like going into second when it's cold
