They have enough punch for your average twisty road, quite a revvy little engine. Handling is brilliant too

early clio 172 which are going for peanuts, then with change look towards some throttle bodies, management, cams, headwork, exhaust. this will make you smile .

tbh i think 172's are great out of the box, would put a decent filter on it, some coilies, uprated pads and enjoy the car.

2002 car for nothing really, had the belt done too which is always nice as its not a nice job to do yourself. and costly at a garage due to it being fiddly.

or what about a VR6 golf?

are you kidding?

evo 5 out of 5 car, comments are + everything -nothing
top gear car of the year on release
2001, What Car Used Sports Car Of The Year
2004, What Car Best Used Sporting Car of the Year Under £10k
Future classic - fifth gear - link
Top gear had a future classic feature a few month ago.

The ford puma is a massively under-rated car, bland is not something I would use to describe the car. However I don't mind that view for various reasons.

Jr asked for a Fun Car, cheap to insure, under 5k - A puma shouldn't be completely disregarded by someone who enjoys driving, just because it isn't the "normal" choice.

all my personal opinion obviously

Fiat coupe 20v turbo - 6 speed le version was and iirc still is the fastest fwd production car hitting 60 in 5 seconds and topping out at 165mph. Stunning interior and something you rarely see. They seldom rust, engines are bullet proof just watch out for cam belt changes as they are an engine out job and will cost between £500-£1000 to do.

Glanza turbo - never really seen why they are so great with evo running costs and maintenance schedule and astra gte performance.

Toyota celica GT4 - a friend of mine had one with about 320bhp and tein coilovers and it was a really potent fast road car. cheaper than evos etc but a little more exclusive if you like the styling.

Mitsubishi colt mirage cyborg - 170bhp standard and room for more too, thats if you enjoy lack of midrange power, better than honda vtec though.

+1 for Fiat Coupe. Just keep pennies for when it breaks. 165mph is a little over-optimisitc though seeing as the TOTB guys wern't even getting those speeds with much more power.

Out of the list you've said, i'd go with the Civic Type R.

Integra Type R also.

No point with the Clio, as eventually, u'll have a similar car.

S14 Nissan 200 Touring. Getting on, but leather interiour, easy chip n tune engine.

What about a BMW E36 M3 (3.0 version)?

Golf Mk2, but a properly nice one for £5k...
