I have spoken to some officers with clicks in their names.

They are written down as '!'

Lass who used to work at our office was spelling something out, she told them X for Xerox (pronouced zeeer-rox if you didn't know, so sounds like a z)

Best foreign call centre worker I had was called Fiona Jones.

Phonetic alphabet isn't hard and is very useful, particularly when you want to freak someone out and sound like you are an authority on something. I generally find that you induce more panic in the person listening to you if you use the proper NATO phonetic set.
