Why would any mining vessle have guns? it's like a street sweeper today being armed with guns
So my point is... from the future, a mining vessel gets sucked into the wormhole and goes back in time... Then decides to unleash hell - just don't understand why it'd have guns in the first place, before their planet is destroyed etc.

It was explained in the film
The ship was a mining ship until Romulus was destroyed - wanting revenge they turned into warriors and changed the ship while looking for Spock in the future, found him and was sucked into a wormhole

On the ipod app store there's 4 short comic things that provide the backstory. In the future after Romulus was destroyed, Nero and his mining vessel ended up at a secret military outpost that developed experimental tech.. and his ship was kitted out in the gear.. it looked like a box before it got made into a beast. They then beat up the Enterprise-E. Then they chased after Spock who was trying to close up the thing that destroyed Romulus, and they both got pulled through.
It's set after Nemesis, and now that it's an alternate timeline, they can do what they want without reference to any of the business from the other shows/movies.
Trekkie maybe
