Can't imagine anybody is going to give you a mortgage if you're not taking any life insurance out

Hi Rob,

Im in your position just a little bit further along. I sold the 182 and cleared my finance, now driving a £400 Corsa diesel(fuel and insurance savings are massive too) so that i could get a house with the Mrs. Ive been with my Mrs nearly 4 years and we have lived together for over 3 years of that in rented accomadation. I must admit i thought she we would get on fine living together, after a few months of seeing eachother all the time(or what felt like it we split up for around a week) we eventually worked things out and the past 3 years have been fine so we have decided to get our own place. We got a deposit together and found a nice 2 bed semi, we hopefully move in 1st August.

We both earn a little less than you and i know all the outgoings will be affordable but if i still had the Clio, with insurance/fuel/finance/serviceing/tax etc i doubt i would be able to do it so to be on the say side i got rid. If i find i have enough disposable icome after a few months of being in and the house being furnished i will consider getting a decent car again.

as soon as you move in with a woman your spending money dissapears they are very absorbant sponges!

Fee still wants a joint account for our wages... i'm not happy with that untill she's on similar money.

You can prob manage on £500 spare a month, i know ive done it in the past when i've had to. Its not ideal though as others have said. There is always something extra to pay a month.

The fridge breaks.
The roof leaks.
The boiler packs in.

Thats a bloody small mortgage too by the looks of it

i'd say you'd need a few hundred more quid every month in order to make sure you can afford it.

i take home about £1800 a month and my girlfriend gets £1000 after tax and i'm not even contemplating thinking we can afford a house until the focus is gone.

theres lots of hidden costs like things breaking that you just don't really budget for

I was with my ex for 17 months. After a year I thought we'd live together etc... But it didn't work out. 1 year is too short IMO.

IMO.

Just had an offer on a house accepted myself

I'm on 18k a year

Parents have put a deposit of 35k down on the house, which is 140k

The mortgage is going to be about 580 a month if it goes through

After that there is

Council Tax
Gas
Electric
Water
TV, Internet, phone
Home Insurance
Life Insurance
Loss of earnings cover

and i've probably forgotten a lot of things

A mate is moving in one of the spare rooms and renting, which will split the bills but it will still be tight

i seriously advise you not to work out bills on paper as it never adds up properly as to what people tell you thats probably the negativety your picking up on matey....

me and mrs bought our first 3 bed house 3 years ago and it was great bills was low and we thought what is all the fuss about but 1-2 years down the line when 600 quid carpets start to wear out and washing machine breaks every 5 minutes and DIY just goes on and on and then there is hidden costs like you want a holiday so like me and mrs 1500 trip to caribbean thats 200 quid a month to pay for it lol then theres car bills like tax/fuel/maintenance we have 2 cars and 1 bike etc etc

typically my water has been 3 different prices so far 28/37/44 pounds.
typically my electric has been 50/67/80/91 pounds
NO GAS
seriously advise home contents ins and life cover think its a legal requirment now to be honest but im not sure

food is feckin expensive we do 150quid month shop and must spend about 40quid week inbetween so thats like 350-400 depending what you buy etc we use combination of morrisons/iceland/tesco

How much is the House and how much deposit you putting down?

Just bought a house with my mrs, £110,000 with £11,000 deposit

solicitors fees were around £850

Im only on £16k a year and the mrs is on £17.5k and we can comfortably afford it and we will be gutting the house first.

Good luck with it mate. I personally sold my S3, paid off my loan and credit card and saved like fuck. Hated giving up my pride and joy but its worth it!

Id sell the mini and pay off the loan mate! best thing i ever did!

You'll need life cover by the way

Yep and i have a similar deposit and a slightly cheaper house.

Thanks for all the advice from people about the house costs, rather than my relationship

Most round here budget £900-1200 PCM to live comfortably and pay the bills etc.

Try renting for 6 months first of all for a few reasons. Check the lady isn't loopy. Clearing up constantly gets pretty tiring after a while!! Affordability, doesn't sound like an issue for you. But you still have the loan etc to look out for.

Market seems to be turning though - confidence definatley returning, it's a great time to buy.
