Because it gives you scene points and hence the status of being "cool"

Its done to get the tyre under the arch, so wider wheels can be fitted.

whats the point of having wider wheels if you've got skinny tyres? im not bitching i just dont see it

better stance. the stance on that jetta is pretty wank though. He's even had to knock the camber in quite abit to get abit of tuck aswell.

Point of wider wheels : Bigger dish on wheels which for some looks better. and a better stance is then achieveable. Skinnier tyres are then fitted so it brings tyre inside arch so can go lower and get a better stance.

This better stance you mention, is it just me that thinks that Jetta looks like it's squatting like a dog ready for a shit?

Totally.
Its like the owners only care about how the car looks parked up and not how it actually drives.

I'd rather not, dogs have a tendency not to like me as it is, more provocation is bound to end in tears

The main reason for stretching tires is to get the widest wheels with the deepest dish possible without breaking the law. Its illegal for any part of the tyre to stick out from the arches. However there's no law on how far the wheel itself sticks out. So too get wide wheels on the car but keep it legal.... Stretch the tyre. Simples. I think a bit of stretch is cool but cars are for driving not parking.

in the vw scene you're the odd one out if you don't have stretched tyres, on here it's the other way round lol

i'm shunned by the vaux scene for running stretch, but also frowned upon in the vw scene for running the right wheels on the wrong car

haha

looks daft
look at the camber on the back, woul det the tyres in no time

dont get it

get proper fitting wheels or modify the arches to fit wider wheels and would look 2000000x better

Looks crap. Dangerous.

Wonder what your insurance assessor would say while examining the aftermath of an accident when you killed someone due to shitty tyres.

'Looks cool eh? reet stretch man'

No.

More like.. 'we're not paying out and you'll have a court case to answer a death by dangerous driving charge'

Idiots

It looks a bit wank to me but I dont think its dangerous? After all, contact surface with the road isnt affected?

that's true to a point, there is a contact surface, but not the correct amount for the width of the wheel.

Surely if you barrel it into a corner you'll run the risk of pulling the tyre off the rim. Same if you were on the motorway at 70 and you have to do a high speed brake/avoidance, you could end up spinning the car or 'digging in' if the rim bites the tarmac..

I personally can't understand the logic myself.

Easy way to acheive less stretch:

Don't lower it so much

Proper sized tyres meaning no stretch at all?

Would look wierd personally seeing a dished/wide wheel with no stretch at all. Now that would look crap. Its just some people like the pictures above, the stretch is too excessive and does look crap. In healthy moderation its safe and looks good.
