Just been examining google maps, the line of sight is brilliant! There are some big commercial units between my house and the workshop but they are at just the right angle to clear

Is there not a way to do it using radio frequency waves?

Wifi is radio
I assume you mean HF/VHF? It doesnt lend its self to high speed data, you can get PMR modems but the throughput is shit.

I think a pair of these might be the answer:
http://www.faculty-x.net/engenius%20eoc-2610%20long%20range%20wireless%20hotspot.htm
£75 each incl. vat and I've found various reviews of people using them up to the 30km range

we installed a pair of those engenious antennas last week davey, they're a piece of piss to install, no idea about your distance issues though tbh. we only used them over 150ish metres over an open yard. you'd be looking at 10 times that figure

Stream security video
I drew the line of sight accross google maps:
It just skims the large building near my house
At the workshop end there are some trees but I'm pretty sure I can mount the mast on one of the taller buildings or telegraph poles as I'm friendly with my land lord

use zone minder mate
http://www.zoneminder.com/
dedicate a box to it, plug in some cameras, view it over a web interface and bosh, 200kbps would be fine

you'll need to clear the trees if you want that distance, they're supposed to scatter the signal big time aren't they?

I can mount it else where to clear the trees at the workshop end, at my house end its a different story, ideally I need to go up on the roof and investigate lol

For the sake of having another PC tower I might as well buy the off the shelf kit plus I'm a windows boy! I'd just get angry and frustraighted with Linux

Nothing wrong with that, but one you've got it installed and working you dont need to fuck about with the command line or anything, just turn it on and use the web interface!

on a desktop level yeah, on my workstation at home I run linux, all I had to do was tweak with the graphic settings to use dual screens and download the closed source drivers for my nvidia graphics card
