You don't get stationed in your home town.

volunteer, you are a full blown copper, but dont get paid, 4 hours a week or somthing, its obviously the best thing to do before joining up full time
[Edited on 27-08-2009 by ryzer]
You'r not a fully blown copper if your a volunteer. You have absolutely no powers at all!!
Colin...you are wrong mate.
Special Constables or Specials as they are known as are volunteer Police attached to most Constabularys in the UK. They have all the same rights as regular police, have all the same equipment etc. but are unpaid apart from expenses.
I'm currently at the end of the recruitment process to bcome a Special with Cheshire. Just got my medical to go then the training starts.
IMO it is a good idea to become a Special in order to see if its right for you, before becoming a regular officer. If I enjoy it, I may will do that.

yeah.. my sis done something like that
She went to visit the cells.. and had to interview some of the prisoners..so my sis (20), another volunteer (70) and a member of the staff went to the first cell.. the member of staff had to ask the prisoner if she knew my sis or the old matey... if he did then they couldn't interview him... so the member of staff said to the prisoner
'do you know any of these 2?'
He replied
'Yes, she is my mum, and he is my dad!'
What your sister did sounds more like work experience rather than being a volunteer police constable (Special) which is what ryzer is on about.

Again, you can get stationed in your home town. Well Specials can anyway. Not sure its advisable tho.

Everyone wants to go into Traffic. its hard to get into.
The recruitment process for police varies from Constabulary to constabulary.
But in general its
Application Form
Security Checks (Family/friends etc)
PIRT (Police Initial Recruitment Test)
Interview
Fitness Test
Medical
More Security checks
References
Job offer
Training
Then you are on probation for 2 years I think and until you've passed your 2 years you can't specialise - traffic etc.

No.
PCSO's (Police Community Support Officer) are paid but have NO rights at all, and carry no PPE like CS/baton etc. They are exactly as they sound. Community Support. Pay is about £16k iirc.

Can't get stationed straight away in your own town BUT if they section you somewhere, after 2 years or more you can opt in to be based in your home town. Make Sense Will?
