They've now got a mandatory spelling test, if you can't spell helicopter it doesn't matter how much money you have.

its about £10k to get all lessons and license. including the instrument rating...

thats for the rotary private pilot. something i certainly want to do at some point!

Where's that from? An IR for fixed wing costs about £10k for a single engine and about £15k for a twin.

But the cost for a PPL heli would be something like £200 an hour. The minimum hours you need are 45 in total. Plus about £25 for each of the 7 ground exams, then about £100 for a radio practical test then about £150 for the flying skills test (with the rental of the aircraft on top of that).

You can fly the type of helicopter you trained in, most likely a Robinson R22, with a passenger for no reward. You can share half the costs between you and your passenger, and luckily the cost of rental is about £50 an hour less than the cost of training. If you want to upgrade to the 4 seater R44, which most tend to do, you need to do something like another 5 hours training as every different heli requires you to get a type rating before you can fly it.

All in all, if you have money to burn, learn to fly a helicopter!
