semi forged pistons allowing for more power
seats
styling
power differences vary
Red top is just the colour of the manifold on STI engines. but apart from the colour there is no difference or gains to be had from one.
closed deck blocks are from very early STI's and have closed water jackets around the cylinder making a much stronger block as oppsed to a fully open one (open deck block) or a semi closed deck block.

Thanks, very helpful. Is the general consensus then that a UK 2000 probably the best compromise? Buy an older import and whack a massive chunk on insurance or pay more for a newer Uk one and pay a bit less on insurance?

TBF, all depends what you want. I was in the same situation and went for a uk car as it was the best my money would buy, middle age owner, not modified and really tidy underneath, all undersealed etc.
But now its a completely different car, and still reaonable to insure really.

im 22 with 5yrs ncb, my golf gt tdi 130 costs me a grand to insure...my 350hp impreza turbo 2000? 500 quid more all mods declared..go figure that one out.
year ago my old xe'd gsi was £800 with all mods declaired
and my standard 14xe gls was the same..
was 23 with 3 years ncb...
all i can say with the scoob is that it is about 2k to insure a uk spec one for me but a evo 7 was only 1,200 to insure so go evo root

Pay the extra for an import. The UK turbo 2000's are slow as standard.
My bros UK classic with the 240bhp WRX engine fitted used to get left by my 5th gen Honda Prelude 2.2 Vti Auto, which by all means isnt quick with only 185bhp.On the go from 30mph upwards i could pull away with ease.

i personally dont see the point in getting the slower scoobys! if you get a scooby its for the performance factor. all in my opinion of course

Crazyness - A UK turbo is nearly twice as much for me to insure than an RS4 cab £1900.

The point is getting the missing power out is a doddle and you pay half as much insurance and less for the car in the first place.
My UK Turbo was over 300 horsies and would piss on a STi..

When I was 22 & had my impreza - a UK Turbo was 500odd to insure & a WRX import was going to be well over a grand.
My old UK Turbo -
Was a good car until my mate drifted it into a set of fire station hazard lights

aparantly so, i havent seen it, but i live 8 miles away from the centre so
But its not just gun crime, its just crime in general from the blacks, sorry i mean bluds
To point out, that was a joke for any cs polictically correct police. Well it was making light fun of a pretty grim truth.
