It leads to Doyle's house, so I can see why they jumped.

Doesn't his house have padded walls though? If not, it really should do.

This is how you do it. Stay in the car, no matter how bad it gets!

In response to Deano!! ^^^ EXACTLY.

Basically they have locked the wheels, so the car will just slide now... but if they had it in gear, it'd regain a bit of traction on the front wheels and they'd be able to steer again! It also looks like they pulled the handbrake which is why the car is skidding round in circles.

I've found if I'm going down a slippery hill in the s2000, if I clutch down / go down without it in gear the car slides all over the place, but if i go down slowly in 1st gear with the clutch biting, it just keeps the car steadily going down in a straight line.

If they still crashed after that then fair enough, what they done in reality was total stupidity.
I'd put money on that not helping. If the road is that iced over I don't even think you with your god like driving skills would have even been able to handle it. It looks like sheet ice, no excuse for bailing though!

That's bad and extremely funny at the same time, going at that speed the last thing on my mind would be jumping out of my car.

So they wouldn't have had more steering in 1st gear than they did with the brakes locked on?

That's nothing to do with god like driving skills, it's common sense, which you seem to be lacking again recently.

I think that the engine braking would have prevented the front wheels from moving, the back end would have overtaken the front and they'd still end up with no steering and sliding sideways down the hill.

Or you could match engine speed to wheel speed to prevent engine braking. That would mean acceleration which would almost certainly lead to the vehicle under-steering into one of the parked vehicles on the corner.

To all those complaining about the person videoing it, it says in the write up that neighbours had warned the couple not to drive due to the conditions, they obviously chose to ignore it

So they are idiots but I don't think they could have avoided it or got the car back in control again, even in gear, its clearly too icey.

it's not clearly too icy. Does the 1 video not say something. If you approached that in first or second (even in an old beemer) you would have almost surely got down the hill. Even if you didn't, as i've already said, cv least you'd have tried. Bailing out because you ran out of sense after stamping on the brakes isn't as cool.

Look at it this way. If they stay in the car, they *might* regain control. If they leave the car, they definitely won't.

And an impact while in a car at 5mph is less painful than sliding along the road on your ass.

I read on another forum that the guy got crushed between his car and a citroen picasso, broken ribs and some other injuries and the car hit a hedge and a Mercedes behind the hedge then hit that wall.
