i have had 4 petrol cars and 3 diesel cars.
the only petrol one that i liked the drive off was the xe corsa.
i had a 1.3 cdti with an exhaust and panel filter, and it sounded really good.
but more importantly drove awesome as well.
diesel ftw tbh

The diesel fiesta I have is a very quiet on idle and performance wise its nearly just as quick as my old 106 gti.
I'd have another one no bother.

There was a thread in premium and my response to it reminded me of you anty
No offence but you have made a few of these threads always saying you have a few grand to play with and at the end of it all you end up with something that cost you a few hundred

My diesel Astra feels like any other high powered petrol engine to drive. If it wasnt for the noise you wouldnt know the difference and the noise is a small price to pay for 50mpg.

And apart from the vxr, and possibly the 2.0t, it's the best engine.

When I bought my car, I drove a 320i petrol and a 320d diesel.
The petrol was 148bhp and 148 lb/ft
The diesel was 163bhp and 258 lb/ft
The petrol does 0-60 in 8.7 seconds and 137mph
The diesel does 0-60 in 8 seconds and 145mph
If I was looking at another modern car, I wouldn't consider a petrol car over the diesel equivalent, even if the BHP was identical.

I'd rather have a 1.4 snort than 300 lb/ft.

i didnt buy my 1.4 thinking oh it sounds better than a diesel. i bought it to put a z20let in, thats the best engine for a corsa
i was merely stating my reason for disliking diesels stop pickin on me
im doing motorsport engineering next year, and fully aware of the potential of a diesel engine. but i still think it sounds like a transit

Was there a difference in price?

actually thasts a good point, if you only do 5k a year and the diesel model commands a higher price then how long would it be until you broke even

Marginal, £400 but the diesel had done 1000 miles more, so call it £500 I guess.

whats the mpg difference between the 2 robin? does the diesel feel a lot quicker with all the extra torque or not because over the shorter rev range?

The book MPG difference is 46 for the petrol and 49 for the diesel. I don't believe that figure for the petrol for a minute.
The diesel felt loads quicker, petrol didn't feel like it had any power at all.
The other thing is that with a remap it's now a lot more powerful and torquey than the 320i would be with the same money spent on it.

Discounting a better car because its noisier to people outside the car is mad.
Can't be any worse than pulling up to the lights in a mod'd car burbling away on idle and sounding like you have a hole in you exhaust when you drive off

The only downside to mine is that it's geared wrong, you have to change gear too soon when you come out of a second gear corner/roundabout.

You should really drive a modern turbo diesel before writing them off due to the sound.
My Golf has been brilliant. Its torquey, great for overtaking and an excellent cruiser due to the low revs. Compared to the equivalent petrol its a million miles better day to day to drive even when putting your foot down. Maybe it does sound like a tractor on the outside, but its not often I have to hear it so why would I care.
Oh, and masses more mpg, easily tunable, cheap to tax and no different on insurance.

Drove an e90 320d which was nice but the 330i was much much better. I really hate diesel power delivery and they often feel quicker than they are.

Not really a fair comparison though, the 330i has over 90bhp more

330i E90 was cheaper than the 320d go figure?
Its not really fair that you are comparing the 320d with mor torque which is only really usefull in one place....the motorway.
e90 330is are such an overlooked bargain IMO 269 bhp and an awsome soundtrack

As said, you can hardly compare a 2 litre diesel to a 3 litre petrol
Try the 330d next time.....

I have, brothers mate has a 330d as a hack about when not using his Grand Tourismo. Its nice but if it was my only car and had to incorporate performance as well I'd be very disapointed.
You may say its unfair butits like saying its not fair to compare a car with 260ft/lb with one that has 120ft/lb?
I think value for money plays a part in this too.
