on my loom theres a small black wire which has a plug on it,coming out of the loom near the dizzy,this needs an ignition live to run.

have you got a spare wire in the engine loom by the dizzy with a plug on it?if so try running a temp live to the battery crank the engine then touch the wire on just to see if it starts if it does then thats your problem.

What engine is it?
You talk about a black wire in the bay which makes me think it is a C20 ecu feed.

if paper clip test works then ecu already has to have power to perform that test so tbh rules that out.
