I'm not sure how hygenic that would be, who knows where your tongue has been

You're very lucky not to have bit your tongue, chipped your teeth, got concusion (sp?) etc.
Check out the Met Parachute for XC full face protection. There is talk of the chin guard smashing to bits on impact, but I guess it's that first and not your face so isn't 100% protection. Then again proper full face lid isn't 100%. Just full face lids are too heavy & hot for XC/all mountain.

The nurses and doctor kept asking if I'd been knocked out cos of the bump & cut above my eyebrow but I took all the impact on my chin and the cut higher up my head came from skidding along the ground rather than a proper impact.
I'll only be having the full face for trail centres and maybe a couple of the knarly big passes in the Lakes. General XC riding I'll use my normal helmet.

Been there and done that
had one the same as that plus I needed steri strips put under my eye too as I snapped the peak on my helmet and the plastic got me there
Mine was from riding trials though, gave up doing it in the rain after that

Doctor reckoned it would all heal quite well apart from one bit he couldn't stitch cos the skin was missing completely! So that will scar but its underneath my chin so hopefully it wont be too bad. Just have to wait and see. Ladies like scars dont they?

I've used my face to brake with before too. Luckily my dad cleaned the wound up when he came to see in in the hospital or i'd still have pit dust embedded in my skin which wouldn't look the best. Knocked myself out though so it wasn't painful!

Should brush/floss/mouth wash more often then your teeth would be a bit stronger and wouldn't fall out when you go over your handle bars and into a patch of padded dandelions. Southern fairy.
