I agree!
What does your receipt say?

take it to a decent garage.

[Edited on 08-07-2010 by adiohead]

If you change the headgasket properly you would get a full top gasket kit which would include the HG, Inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, rocker gasket, camshaft oil seals AND the valve stem seals.

Ahh I see, but the garage still fobbed him off by sending him on his way. Surely the mechanic must have some idea what is causing it to eat oil

It wasnt a dog when it was sold. It just happen to have an engine issue which previous owner and doyle were unaware of.

The car was probably ragged from the second doyle got it, which probably just sent the car over the limit and caused some of the issues which doyle has had to replace.

Its part of buying a second hand car in a private sale, you check the car over, test drive and check it before you hand over the cash. If it breaks an hour, a month or a year after you buy it, its your responsibility.

However this is neither here nor there, the real question is the initial question from doyle, what will Trading Standards do. If you can give evidence of what the garage have changed and the guarantee they gave you, they will then contact the garage and tell them to rectify the issue if the problem you are having has been caused directly by work they carried out.

If its the valve stem seal and they didn't replace this part when they did the work, there is nothing they have to do to help you out and will give you a nice garage bill for the repairs.

So, did the car actually need all the things that have been changed so far?

£120 on the rad
£650 on the headgasket, cambelt, and oil filter
Total spent on problem = £770

Good enough to spot a fair bit of smoke.

Dont get me wrong, if someone is stupid enough to not look over a car properly before buying it then they can have no complaints when it turns out to have issues, but saying the car was perfect before it was sold is a very long way from being true. Not that it matters now, sold as seen etc.

Look on the bright side, I paid 1000 quid for a rebuild and it still smoked like Colombo.

I no longer shop there.
