Clio DCI, Y reg onwards one.
65/80bhp (model dependant), all the toys, comfy seats, 55-60MPG (mine returned a constant 57MPG), £30 tax, dirt cheap insurance and one you get wont be an absolute DOG for 2.5k

Same with my mum's old 1.1 Saxo, we worked out once it was doing 47mpg or something like that.
Lupo diesel gets my vote, can't believe 3CM was the only other person to think of it

My 12v Corsa never but a foot wrong in 3 years apart from 'wear and tear'. 50mpg continuously - depending on your mileage and the price in diesel, you might be better off with one.

50mpg if you drive like a saint. The problem is, they're so slow that to get anywhere you need to rev the bejesus out of them, wrecking the fuel economy. And yes, I speak from experience.

I just bought a 1989 ford sierra 2 litre lx minter for £300. Got a bit of poke is rear wheel drive and does around 35 miles to the gallon. and its not a gutless 1.0l piece of crap diesel. Result.
MPG is not the be all and end all

Im another one that will say Renault Clio 1.5 dci. Doesnt feel as gutless as a 1.0 / 1.2
My Mums had a 51 plate 1.5 dci clio for 5 / 6 years. I learned to drive in it and used to rag it about often. only parts its ever needed apart from brakes / tyres is a new alternator last year. now on 95k

I posted a thread about this not so long ago, my budget was £2.5 aswel. Ended up getting a Clio 05 plate, Black billabong model, immaculate, new tyres all round FSH, 42k miles. 12 month tax and MOT. It's been a tremendous car and is brilliant on fuel, easily ave 52mpg! No way you would pick a diesel up for 2.5k without moon miles/cat d, dogs etc and the extra cash outweighs the amount you'll save on tax etc. Coming from some nice cars, and ignoring the driving position(which you get used to) it's superb to drive, so much so that it was only bought for the interim but I'm going to keep it due to the amount of money it's saving me. I've realised having a nice car isn't the be all and end all like I thought for the past 7 years.

Years back I would have said the AX diesel but they are getting on and they are still dear on the tax, if you just want a cheap knock about I would echo the Clio diesel. Just on the tax savings alone it makes it a far more budget friendly car, before you even get into the MPG. Cheap arse tyre sizes, cheap servicing if you are able to do it yourself (I assume not TBH) etc and as the VAT increases, wages freeze, emergency budget kicks in then prices will certainly hold strong for a while.

One can afford to do such things when one has "considerab-ley more monay, dhan yeouu"
Wow Daimo, you are loaded, you will take the money from a bike sale and only have £500 extra to chip in. Go you.
I bet you feel great and all 'I can afford to', when your Mrs sold HER car for about 2/3rd's of the probable market value.
Check rich Daimo out everyone!

Daimo gets to a point where he gets handed his arse and ignores it anyway. That's his normal tactic as well as moaning about what people read on the Internet but thankfully people take his crap tech advice with a pinch of salt.
