why are you looking at a derv?
not worth it unless actualy doing alot of distance, you wont see the mpg rewards and maintance costs are more

Short of a VXR the 1.9 CDTi is the best Astra H to go for imo Warren - not just because of mpg, just the way it drives, overall cost of running etc (compared to the 2.0T for example)

This is the reason why i was considering the 1.8 vvt 140 instead of the diesel.
i know someone who has just ditched his 1.8 astra and after 3 years and 70k, it killed 2 boxes (i helped swap the first out for the guy and then the second was going as he got rid the other week 0 less than a year since changing). They appear to be utter crap - both the 5 and 6 speed ones.
Made outta chocolate.

but for what a gather he doesnt do many miles
people who buy these desiels realy dont need them, they clog them up and get shit (35mpg) fuel comsumption due to stop start short journeys
there are costlty common problems, there expensive to buy (2k+) more than say a 1.8 equalent....
personaly if i was him it would be a 1.6t which can see 200bhp quite easy, or a normal 2.0 turbo sporthatch
the 1.8vvt mapped can see 155bhp, nothing amazing but okay

Rich you right i was looking at the diesel engine because of the performance they give not because i need it for doing lots of miles which i dont.
Also looking at golfs now round a 54/55 plate 2.0 gt tdi 140.just stick a nice set of wheels on and voila
Basically i want something more modern/more comfortable/good performance and not something that cost a fortune to run (nothing less than 30mpg ideally)

honestly if not doing miles a desiel is NOT for you
you want performance get a 2.0 turbo, or a 1.6turbo, the extra cost of a derv isnt worth it over the mpg incase and running costs (maintance) are more for a desiel!
how many miles do you do a week? what sort of driving? i get 35-40mpg out of my 1.8 astra more than good enough

i am being very cautious about i will say that.its taken me a while to save a good amount up for a car and need to make sure im making the right choice as its not just hundreds of pounds its thousands and not going to be taking any finance out it will be cash only (i dont want any debts) so i need to really sure before i part with it.

How many miles is "not many"?
I do just over 10 miles each way to work and find my diesel to be a great compromise between economy and b-road fun.
Any less than that though I'm not sure it'd be worth it.
