This was mine
Cant agree with Jambo enough just lack any soul and literally sold mine after year in which it only did 3k as I prefered my parents ST170.
Even Warrens with a VXR turbo was disapointing and the 1.8 Coupe we drove accross europe was much nicer to drive!

I still think they look brilliant, if a decent one came up nearby with lowish miles I'd probably buy it.

They sound awesome with a good exhaust system too, the noise is probably my favourite thing about mine

Well I've had mine for a year now, bought it because I loved the look of it, decent spec and quick (I was used to a 1.6 Astra van and a 1.0 Corsa before so I would find it quick )
Like whats already been said, turbo's tend to go around 50k, mines on 70k on the standard turbo and still going strong, just depends how the car has been looked after.
For common problems check this link out:
http://www.zlet.co.uk/Common%20Probs.htm
Found that rather handy, and if you go on Astra Owners Network there is a common problems list in the Astra G chat section but its not limited to the Gsi model.
Ive enjoyed mine, Ive had a couple of problems with mine such as a coolant leak which was traced to the waterpump but thats due for renewal anyway so not a problem, and some boost issues due to a local garage messing with the actuator, but at the minute the car is fine.
They don't handle in standard form at all and have had the back end skip out on me once before, have heard only good things about the whiteline rear arb's for these though, and the usual lot of suspension kits are available on ebay, courtenay sport, LMF etc.
Lots of engine goodies available now aswell, so plenty of options to choose from if you do want to tune it.
Regarding the MPG, around town I get between 20-23mpg, on motorway runs I get 32mpg, obviously it depends how its driven too.

Noise oh yes
I had trouble with the turbo unit on mine, but I thrashed it repeatedly.
For the abuse it got it coped quite well.
I don;t agree with it being thirsty.
Mine was roughly 300bhp and it was great on fuel.
Compare that to a 300bhp impreza or evo and I was getting 50% more mileage than them.
My old one,. broken and gone now

jambo summed it up
handling shocking, even with mods
power boring, even with 250+bhp set next to a sti imprezza at 150mph, yet didnt feel fast no excitement driving it, dont like the gearbox gearing
bad on fuel, no infact terrible, i done £400 in fuel in 2 weeks, driving to 3 track days and only doing 2 15minute sessions
no feed back through steering, and was realy light?
yet the 1.8 coupe i had handled better, felt better, steering was heavier which was nice shame the gsi never felt like it
oh and the STUPID wing on the back!!! cant see a damn thing

Gold coupe's
Id have one. Infact, im now on pistonheads
Oh and agree with Warren the wing restricts vision of anything behind you, its also an awkward car to park as it has a stubby bonnet, high sides and a wing on the back.
Get get a coupe
