Do the engines ever fail on these? and how much would a clutch set you back?

If you want to know how much a clutch will set you back it is too much. The engine will fail eventually, like EVERY car, Your questions are pretty shit if you want to ask members who have the cars btw.

The engines have failed yes but from what I can gather off the forums they are the ones that where abused/neglected so IMO no more likely than any other engine if looked after

Iirc £600 rings a bell on clutches but could be wrong

The expensive servicing costs are asociated with what dealers charge, so even by knocking off a couple of hundred quid the Indy's are still making a killing.

I think people forget this car once cost 50k new so parts asociated with the upkeep are going to be expensive!

People often own them and quickly try and cut corners when they realise the running costs hence why if you sit on dedicateed M3 forums you see two breeds of people. The first lot dont even bat an eye lid at a 1500 quid service the second lot and the second lot woner why they have spent 15% of the cars value when they buy a 8 year old sub 10k m3?

In this case the car is rarely going to be used this is an ideal scenario if it was a daily thats when the bills rack up.

Just need to rember they are like any other car they have faults and niggles and considering the level of tune they are at I'd say its pretty damn good some of them are still going at 200k miles!

But yeah pretty much a swindle, along with £100 an hour labour rates.

Yes since they have solid lifters, the clearances need checked and shims put in sometimes, thats why you get 1 big service bill, takes a long time (labour) to check these.

Clutch shouldn't be too costly really if you go to the right place! The smg is the same clutch as a 330 iirc! Done a few at work now where owners get over excited with launch control!

I have an e39 m5, similar costs as an e46 m3 on stuff, parts are often silly money! But alot of knowledge bow on forums to do stuff yourself! Will hugely effect resale tho.

Alot of this can be avoided! I'dwant to see before and after measurements from the dealer doing the work.

Had one in with a failed oil pump which was a costly repair

I'm temptered on one of these myself giving the mileage i do in my own car. Like how little money these loose.

Personally i'd be purchasing all service bits myself and getting a mate who works in a garage to do all the work. Parts still cost a fair bit though. I don't see the point in a 5-8 year old car going to BMW for any work unless specialist tools were needed. As with any newish car you will always need the main dealer to do work if a tool costs thousands.
