My mum had her mobile phone on when she was in the hospital recently, nurses/doctors etc. didn't say anything (she was a patient in the hospital, not just visiting someone).

The main reason you werent allowed to use phones was so that you had to use theres, therefore spending more and making them money.

Which hospital you work at?

I work in a hospital and carry mine as does everyone else. Keep it on silent though

Southend Hospital.

My phone's always on me as half the time I'm using it as a light, or taking pictures or using the spirit level

I turn it on to Aeroplane mode, have no bother then if i need it in an Emergency (i.e to ring family not an Ambulance you smart arse's) as it takes ages to load up. Then flick of a button its back to AP mode. Just respect imo.

But all you're going to get is people seeing you using your phone, not thinking 'that boy's done a good deed by sticking it in aeroplane mode'.
