That's what i always think. I get looking at other cars and then realise that the 911s are so much nicer in every way.

I think I'm falling in love with the 996. It ticks all the boxes, should have the reliability and there is also a hardtop convertible...

porsche ftw
there is also a kit you can get now to put the 997 front on the 996, the leading edge of the door is different on the 997 as is the inner wings so you cant just do a straight swap with genuine wings

I looked at them but not sure if the styling does it for me, even though I do like them. The monaro was a better option but I still think the 996 is better all round

I wouldnt get a soft top 996; the drive is shocking compaired to the hardtop. I thoughts thats what i wanted as would always prefer a soft top until i took both out. I still miss mine; was such a well balanced and practical car; could be used for anything
TVR was awsome; and i tried to use it everyday but cost sooooo much; about 12MPG and scared to go out of the range of my home recovery cover!! Looked and sounded the nuts tho

Is there really THAT much of a difference between the hard top and soft top then?!
Talking about powerful rear wheel drive cars - I'd better take my day's post to the post office now before it's too snowy to get the Skyline off the drive

Yeah i found there was; and i've driven a few hardtop and there soft top version over the years. Also with the Porsche the Tiptronic was horrid; about as much fun to use as changing CD!! Also a C4 holds the road really well; even had mine out in the snow!

That 996 that I liked has already been sold I've thought about what you said about the poor performance of the soft tops though and I think I am back on the idea of the Z4 Coupé. There's one for sale in a garage 25 miles from here at only £800 more than the Parker's guide price for a good conditioned private one, and it comes with 12 months MOT, 6 months tax and 12 month warranty. I'm gonna ring first thing in the morning to see if I can arrange a test drive :-)

That one :-) Also, the insurance is about 40% cheaper than the Skyline even though the car is twice the price.

I take about 3 sacks of mail to the sorting office every day so a bit of space would actually be very handy, whereas in the elise/VX220 I'm not sure where it would go. I'll see how the test drive goes tomorrow

I went for a test drive in that Z4 above this afternoon and fell in love. I've put down a desposit and picking it up on Tuesday :-) Also, the insurance is 40% cheaper than the Skyline even though the car is twice the value, which was a nice surprise!!
22k miles, 2 owners, full bmw service history. I'm pretty chuffed with it!

Well I've now picked up and and driven it home from the garage in Worcester (25 miles away) in -2.5 degree temperature. The traction control was having a field day
It's obviously slower than the Skyline but as a downgrade speed-wise, it's still faster than I was expecting, and it's so much more refined. So far so good, and I will try and get some proper pics of it tomorrow in the light
