Diesel isn't always cheaper to run.

I've had a few VAG 1.9tdi's now and get fairly consistent mileage, around the 40mpg with the Fabia vRS engine.

Bart posted his 535d figures in the thread in Off Day, I didn't work it out but it wasn't very good mpg.

If driven sensibly it will do almost 40mpg or like an idiot 20mpg.

So John are you saying a 535d will cost more to run than a 535i ?

No, I like diesels and they can be cheaper to run, they aren't always cheaper to run though and in my experience 60mpg just isn't what the majority of people get in real life.

BMW 535d M Sport

That's about 30mpg, what does a 535i get?

But even at 40mpg against the petrols equivalent of...30 ? (parkers says book figure is 33) Thats still worth it.

It's only not worth it when you factor in initial purchase price, maintenance etc

Forgot the actual figure, it could be 20 or 70, what i'm trying to point out is that the equivalent petrol will cost more to run.

Its impossible to compare, Eck would need to drive the car on the exact same journeys in exactly the same way. A 535i could be gingerly pussied around and get 33 to the gallon....

Total cost of ownership is a better figure to compare than what it costs to run IMO.

Even if you compare the petrol and diesel equivalents of the same car, this figure depends on what they cost to buy.

It's not as simple as diesels get better mpg.

There are other factors that make the diesel better for me, for instance normally better performance on an equivalent diesel while having the better mpg, that's personal opinion though.

I'm the same John, I enjoy having a car with (for its size) silly hp, great mpg and shit loads of torque.

But, answering the OP's question as they have put it:

IMO, Yes. Although the prices is completely beside the point.

The price is irrelevant, the difference between petrol and diesel matters.

His question doesn't really mean anything

Mine can do about 600-700 miles using a full 55l tank of diesel if i used it on motorway runs. So pretty good imo

No I meant, the fact he's saying "because the prices are now so high"....the difference hasn't changed that much

I know, I'm agreeing, the actual cost doesn't matter, it only becomes an issue if the difference in price between petrol and diesel changes.

Both of the cars you are looking at arent particularly great MPG wise.. Go for the 306 1.4 16v diesel. And the vauxhall 2.2dti is terrible.

I can get 60+ out of my motor on a flat motorway at 50mph, but in the real world I get about 45 in the winter and 50-53 odd in the summer... Book average mpg is closer to 70 but you'd really have to be a total melvin to get that.

It does depend on a lot of circumstances really.

I do about 15/16k a year in my Mito. I wanted something that had a little bit of poke, so I was left with either the 1.4 120bhp (which was like the runt of the litter in the mito group, only had a 5 speed box etc) or the 1.4 155bhp - both petrol turbo engines.

I've had both as a courtesy car and both returned late 20's early 30's figures. The 120bhp was £500 cheaper to buy and the 155 the same price as my car.

My 1.6 diesel does late 40's early 50's MPG, plus the tax is cheaper.

So, in my case, the diesel is cheaper with similar power.

I've read on the Alfa Forums that even the 1.4 16v petrol can't make 40mpg.

And that's being generous to the diesel, they don't get 28mpg.
